Going swimming twice in less than seven days.  That's rare for me!  I just hope I can keep it going all summer.

    Ramps
So, Mark Ramprakash finally managed to score his hundredth first class hundred yesterday.  I'm thrilled for him, I really am.  It's just that since scoring his ninety ninth one at the start of May, Surrey  have played seven Championship matches home and away.  And I went to the first six of them hoping to be there when he reached the milestone.  But Leeds was just a match too many, too far away, too difficult to arrange (time off work, booking travel and hotel, cost) so I decided not to go.  So of course that's when he did it.  So now I feel as disappointed for not being there as I feel pleased for him.  And he's quite possibly going to be the last man to reach the landmark!

Following three consecutive four-nil defeats, West Ham finally managed to win a match!  Now if the England cricket team could manage to beat New Zealand then I'll be very happy!

I popped into my local Sainsburys last night for a few bits and had a nice surprise!  They've been refurbishing it for a while now and they've started selling clothes.  Not designer labels obviously but decent looking casual clothes.  At reasonable prices as well.  Come next payday I might have a proper look round and buy a couple of things.

    Foreigners in English Football.
I was pretty horrified to find out that none of Arsenal's players this afternoon were English, or British, or even from the UK/Rep Ireland. So I decided to check out stats from all West Ham's Premiership matches this season to date to see how 'British' the top division in English football is.

    Annual Leave
I'm coming towards the end of my 3 weeks of summer leave. I've done some enjoyable things; spent a couple of days at Guildford watching Surrey play Worcester, gone to a garden party to celebrate my uncle's 90th birthday, spent a couple of days staying with Jay in Kent and spent a gloriously hot day at Lord's (Surrey lost to Middlesex unfortunately). Now I have a couple of free days, followed by the Oval Test Match, the Saturday of which unfortunately clashes with West Ham's first home game of the season...Then it's back to work!

Three weeks and two days of annual leave, starting tomorrow. I shall be able to bask in the glorious summer sun, have picnics in the park, spend a day at the sea-side and watch England beat India at the Oval. In my dreams! Oh well, my S1 Supernatural DVDs arrived today so I can sit and watch all my favourite episodes again (without the **** advert breaks)!

The Youth of Today (and their Parents)
I've been following this story today:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6896435.stm

My first thought was concern about the total stupidity of 16 year old girls today. Either they knew what they were doing and were stupid enough to think they could get away with it, or they had no idea what was going on and were just stupid. My second thought was about the parents. Had I come home aged 16 and told my mum that I was going on a school trip to France, her first question would have been "How much is it going to cost?" Her second question would have been "How are you going to pay for it?" She would also have wanted to know a bunch of things like... where I'd be staying, who would be leading the trip, how were we going to get there, oh and "Where's the permission slip for me to sign?" Yet these parents blithely accepted everything their daughters told them. Is stupidity catching?

On the plus side, West Ham are definitely staying up (not that we didn't know that already but Sheffield Utd's case has failed).

On the minus side, we've got hail, thunder and lightening in London at the moment.

Five Stargate Fic Recs for Ankhsign
Number 1 would have been Ripples but some nasty horrible person already mentioned it, so I'll go for 'How to Manage Your Alpha Male' by ELG. It's a cross-over with a number of fandoms and is hilarious. There's a sequel as well.

Number 2 is 'the Legend of Daniel Jackson' by Sam Walker. My favourite 'Little Danny' story but have a box of tissues ready when you read it.

Number 3 is 'Prodigal's Return' by Brenda Anders.

Number 4 is 'Nor Iron Bars a Cage' by Lex.

Number 5 is 'True Foundations' by Scribe.

In fact, pretty much anything in any fandom by the above authors is recommended.

I met up with a group of friends yesterday in London, to say goodbye to Welsh Helen who is moving back to Wales. We spent the afternoon in an Italian restaurant and I was very good, avoiding all alcohol. We had a great time, eating and gossiping. My brother obeyed his orders and rang me at 5pm to give me the great news that West Ham beat Man U and are staying in the Premiership. All in all a great afternoon.

Rant number one. My jaw is still hurting so I went back to the surgery on Thursday. I saw a different doctor and she told me that my ear infection has cleared up. Great. She didn't know why I was still in pain; she suggested that it might be the after effects of the infection or it might be a dental problem. So, yesterday I went to see the dentist. He took an x-ray with a new super duper hi-tech machine and diagnosed a probable problem with a wisdom tooth in the left hand side of my mouth. It's almost a year to the day since I had a wisdom tooth pulled out from the right hand side. He's prescribed some anti-biotics (I've just finished the ones from the doctor) and told me I can't drink alcohol until I've finished them. How am I going to celebrate/drown my sorrows about West Ham's fate tomorrow?

Rant number two. Bl**dy Sainsburys. I believe it was earlier this month that they were giving away bags which are supposed to last forever so that you don't need their stupid plastic ones any more. I didn't bother getting one because I have a huge collection of carrier bags which I re-use until they fall apart. I went to Sainsburys this morning to buy a few things. I prominently displayed the bag I was holding and the check out clerk *still* started to put my things in a brand new bag. That was my cue to be less than polite to the poor man. It wasn't his fault, it's what he's been trained to do, but it's so flippin' annoying. Do Sainsburys have no interest in environmental matters or am I expecting too much of a major corporation?

Rave. I've just discovered the BBC programme 'New Tricks'. I've watched a couple of repeated S1 episodes on UK Gold and the most recent one on BBC1. It's fantastic. I ordered the DVDs of series one and two on the 10th. They arrived this morning. Talk about good service. I'm just looking forward to a New Tricks marathon.

    Football Excitement
Another great result for West Ham today. We've now moved out of the relegation area thanks to our 3-1 victory over Bolton. Now all we need to do is get at least a point at Old Trafford next week. Or (which is more likely) hope that Wigan don't beat Sheffield United. (Or possibly hope that Wigan stuff Sheff Utd and that we don't lose by too many at Man U, but I'll have to double check my maths re goal difference on that one.) I'm trying hard not to get my hopes up but it's difficult after such a brilliant first half performance today. If we'd played like that all season we'd be challanging for a European place next year. Mind you, knowing West Ham, next Sunday will be a damp squib!

So, I've been on leave this week. I woke up on Monday with an aching and stiff jaw. Not too serious, just annoying. I've had hay-fever for a few weeks and a cold for the last 10 days or so and I thought it was just an extension of them. My jaw was still uncomfortable on Tuesday and Wednesday and my ear felt sore yesterday. This morning I couldn't open my mouth properly, it was too stiff on the left hand side. I spent a couple of hours at the doctors waiting to be seen. I'm now on something called amoxicillin for an ear infection. I hate being unwell.

    Cricket etc
I went to the Oval after work today and saw the end of the Surrey v Hampshire Championship Match. Very exciting and lovely and warm in the sun. It's just a shame that Surrey lost, especially as I had a pound bet with a friend that we would win. Had we won, then I'd be £50 better off!

I tried not to listen to my friends announcing the football scores (they were listening to them on the radio) but failed miserably. West Ham won (again) and I'm now starting to think that we can stay up. Now all we have to do is win at least one of our last two matches (and hope that our relegation rivals don't).

So, two weeks off work. What to do??? Any suggestions?
