Current mood: uncomfortable

Rant number one. My jaw is still hurting so I went back to the surgery on Thursday. I saw a different doctor and she told me that my ear infection has cleared up. Great. She didn't know why I was still in pain; she suggested that it might be the after effects of the infection or it might be a dental problem. So, yesterday I went to see the dentist. He took an x-ray with a new super duper hi-tech machine and diagnosed a probable problem with a wisdom tooth in the left hand side of my mouth. It's almost a year to the day since I had a wisdom tooth pulled out from the right hand side. He's prescribed some anti-biotics (I've just finished the ones from the doctor) and told me I can't drink alcohol until I've finished them. How am I going to celebrate/drown my sorrows about West Ham's fate tomorrow?

Rant number two. Bl**dy Sainsburys. I believe it was earlier this month that they were giving away bags which are supposed to last forever so that you don't need their stupid plastic ones any more. I didn't bother getting one because I have a huge collection of carrier bags which I re-use until they fall apart. I went to Sainsburys this morning to buy a few things. I prominently displayed the bag I was holding and the check out clerk *still* started to put my things in a brand new bag. That was my cue to be less than polite to the poor man. It wasn't his fault, it's what he's been trained to do, but it's so flippin' annoying. Do Sainsburys have no interest in environmental matters or am I expecting too much of a major corporation?

Rave. I've just discovered the BBC programme 'New Tricks'. I've watched a couple of repeated S1 episodes on UK Gold and the most recent one on BBC1. It's fantastic. I ordered the DVDs of series one and two on the 10th. They arrived this morning. Talk about good service. I'm just looking forward to a New Tricks marathon.

Heh, Sainsburys employee here! They do actually care alot and I think that of the main supermarkets they're probably one of the best. Unfortunately the checkout staff have it absolutely drummed into them that they have to 'scan and pack' at least the first six items (I think it's six) and that failure to do so is bad, bad, bad *g*

Not often I defend my employers, but from all the literature we get and what we're told they're doing alot behind the scenes and have more planned for the future. I believe all their orange bags are recycled.

I fully understand that it's Sainsburys' policy to scan and pack, it just drives me round the bend along with the "How are you this morning/afternoon?" All I want to do is pack my groceries and get out of the shop as quickly as I can, not make new bestest friend! Not the fault of the checkout staff at all, just policy.

I always wrestle the bag off the Sainsbury's checkout people because the majority of them don't have a clue about how to pack things (well, the blokes don't - the women are better). I just got fed up with finding the milk put in either on its side or even upside down, with the rest of the shopping chucked in any old how. They need a few lessons from the M&S check-out staff who pack things very carefully.

Now if I'm in Sainsbury's, I just say politely, "Thank you, but I'll pack" and after they've got over the shock, they get on with scanning and leave me to pack my shopping.

Sorry about your jaw. Hope you feel better tomorrow!

So, they put the fresh tomatoes and strawberries on the bottom, put the eggs in next and cover everything with frozen food, tins and a box of washing powder. Right?

It hurts to chew! Hopefully the antibiotics will have stated to work. I've also bought some painkillers. I really need to get a decent nights sleep!

I wish half of our staff could bother to ask how you were, I don't get a bonus this year because we've failed our Mystery Shopper report because staff can't be bothered to interact with customers.

It's a fine line I suppose between politeness and being OTT. My biggest pet peeve is stores offering me their store card and a 20% discount, I hate it, hate it, hate it! In fact now in BHS as I hand my card or cheque over I tell them not to ask, LOL.

A nice smile and a "good morning or good afternoon" is lovely. Having a complete stranger ask how I am is not something with which I feel comfortable. I think I'm just 'English' that way.

I agree the checkout staff don't know how to pack. Even if I put things on the conveyor in the order I want them packed, they still can't get it right.

I practically had a tug of war with one Sainsbury's person recently because she was shoving all my stuff into one bag and I was trying to distribute it evenly between two.

And all this interacting with customers takes time. Even 'I'll pack' 'Are you sure?' 'Yes I'm sure' takes time when I've got a train to catch. I'm quite satisfied if the checkout person makes eye contact, smiles, and says thank you and goodbye when they hand me my change.

Hope the pills have started to work, Ali.
